Securing the capacity of Hanningfield Water Treatment Works and providing water resilience to the local community
The wash water system at Hanningfield Water Treatment Works (WTW) needed upgrading to cater to increasing customer demand and to comply with changing consented discharge parameters. Essex & Suffolk Water needed a partner they could trust. Based on our previous work around the WTW, designing the whitelillies reedbeds to provide a natural, low-energy nature-based solution for sludge treatment and our previous investigations into wash water treatment, they knew we could help.
We provided design services to collaboratively develop a solution to address the site’s wash water challenges. First, we developed two new tanks and a new pumping station. This was then followed by refurbishment of the existing wash water tanks and pumping station. Our design also allowed the WTW to remain operational throughout construction, avoiding disruption to the operation of the works.
The project resulted in increased water supply resilience, treating more water while minimising energy use through more efficient wash water pumping. The design also avoids the use of a chemical aid in the settlement process, reducing carbon emissions for transport. The installation of solar panels helps offset energy use, with surplus energy being used to operate other plant infrastructure.
