Developing transport options to improve connectivity to a new £350 million harbour
Aberdeen South Harbour is a £350m new harbour development designed to accommodate growing demand and larger vessels in Aberdeen. Aberdeen City Council appointed our team to develop and appraise a wide range of multi-modal transport options to improve connectivity to the harbour. The goal? To maximize the potential economic benefits of this major, national level project. It was also possible that the work would potentially form part of a City Region Deal (CRD) package designed to boost economic development.
The planning process followed the Scottish Transport Appraisal Guidance. A key part of the study was to engage with local stakeholders to determine future scenarios to cover the range of activities which may emerge at the new harbour over time. Road, bus and active travel related options were developed and appraised from a transport, engineering and environmental perspective. Public and stakeholder consultation was undertaken with a subset of options being taken forward for more detailed appraisal. A key part of this was traffic modelling to determine the operational and economic impacts of the different options.
The study findings will be used to progress a preferred option under the CRD to provide improved access to the harbour and capitalise on the opportunities presented by this investment.
