Making cycling an everyday way to travel in the city
Through a competitive tender process, our team was selected to support Birmingham City Council to accelerate the pace of cycling growth in Birmingham. The goal? To deliver a big change in their provision of active travel infrastructure across the city through a £30 million Department for Transport funded project.
The Birmingham Cycle Revolution project is a city-wide scheme to radically improve facilities for cyclists on five main routes in and out of the city, along quieter residential streets, green routes, and canal towpaths over hundreds of kilometres of on and off-road routes. The project was one of eight funded though the DfT’s Cycle City Ambition Grant scheme. Bicycle-friendly road design presents many challenges, requiring space to be created for cyclists through the introduction of dedicated cycle lanes, the relocation of on-street parking, changes to junction layouts, and wider footways to provide areas of shared space.
We were involved in all aspects of scheme development and promotion initiatives including design, commissioning of traffic surveys, traffic management order reviews, junction capacity assessments (traffic modelling), consultation, and stakeholder engagement. Our design work also contributed towards the formation of design standards for the scheme.
