Chris Hudson explores the barriers to the uptake of CCUS, and how to overcome them in this Utilities Tech Outlook article
Carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), is an important emissions reduction technology that can be applied across the energy system. By implementing CCUS, the Waste-to-Energy sector can further contribute to decarbonisation and the circular economy.
In August 2022, the UK’s Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy announced 20 projects to be taken into the ‘due diligence’ stage of the Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage funding process. This included four Energy from Waste (EfW) facilities located within two CCUS clusters.
Multiple barriers, including technological challenges and incentivisation, mean that to date, we don’t have any carbon capture plants developed on EfWs in the UK.
As we look toward a decarbonised waste industry for the future, how do we overcome these barriers and help drive wider deployment of CCUS?
