Putting a plan in place for sustainable transport improvements
Our role on the Ōtaki to north of Levin (Ō2NL) project includes over a decade of multidisciplinary work—collaborating with Waka Kotahi to improve the transport options, safety, and resilience offered by the major route. Future-focused practices are key to lasting positive change, so the Preliminary Infrastructure Sustainability Management Plan we helped develop has been an essential part of these upgrades.
In the management plan, we highlighted the alignment and gaps of the Ō2NL project against sustainability requirements. Plus, we identified opportunities for improvement. Here, we’re aiming to manage and reduce the project’s impact on the environment and improve ecological, social, cultural, and economic outcomes—a crucial part of holistic project success. Waka Kotahi’s approach to sustainability on Ō2NL is consideration and implementation early in the process. The management plan works to facilitate this within the preferred project option, laying the foundation for these outcomes at future project stages.
If development isn’t sustainable, we can’t call it successful. For an ongoing project with a variety of elements and considerations, it’s vital that our transport improvements align with community and environmental wellbeing throughout. While the project is still in detailed design, we’re proud that we helped Waka Kotahi bring sustainability thinking to the fore earlier than most other transport infrastructure projects of the past.
