Bringing more historic content to Western Australia while improving the reliability and efficiency of Perth’s cultural precinct
The New Museum for Western Australia provides a modern and significantly larger home for exhibition content—much of which has remained in storage for many years. In addition to permanent galleries, it contains spaces for temporary and touring exhibitions, offices, restaurants, and function spaces.
Refurbishing heritage buildings dating back to the 1850s presented both a challenge and an opportunity. Care was taken to minimise impact while also providing new services and allowing for public spaces. Stantec worked closely with Multiplex and architects HASSELL+OMA, providing design and consulting for electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, fire, lighting, ICT, audio-visual, acoustic, and vertical transport services. Our mechanical and electrical teams designed a central plant system serving the entire Perth Cultural Precinct, improving the reliability, efficiency, electrical demand, ongoing running costs, and environmental impact of the precinct. Efficiencies continue into the museum, with LED lighting controlled via presence detection and daylight harvesting. We selected and positioned façade lighting following on-site testing to emphasise the heritage features of the existing buildings.
This exciting project creates a modern civic and learning environment that shares the stories of the State’s people and place, acting as a gateway to explore Western Australia.
