Helping a small community keep its water infrastructure buildings safe for the future

Covering a large area northwest of South Island, the Tasman District is home to three national parks and a small population of just under 59,000 residents. Providing safe drinking water to the community and resilience of vital infrastructure is a crucial concern for The Tasman District Council (TDC). They approached us to help design structural updates to one of their water treatment buildings to improve seismic strength.

This building services Mapua, a small village west of Nelson. As a popular tourist destination, Mapua’s 2,500 resident population swells significantly in summer. Using industry guidelines, our structural team designed steel supports for the concrete building to increase resilience and longevity. We also undertook the management, surveillance, and quality assurance (MSQA) for the structural design-and-build treatment plant upgrade and earthquake strengthening works.

The project provides TDC and the community with confidence in the future durability of the water treatment plant and provision of their water needs.
