Promoting a thriving city with a growing population that wants to work, live, and play in downtown
Tucson, Arizona, is a thriving city with a growing population that wants to work, live, and play in downtown. To keep this community moving, the City of Tucson decided to offer a new transportation option—the modern streetcar.
Bringing the streetcar to downtown Tucson would be challenging. But our team was on board to help. Our job involved providing civil engineering design services on Line Segment Two, which runs through the heart of downtown. Of the project’s four segments, this line was the most difficult as it required careful coordination and involved issues such as undiscovered utility lines.
Having previously worked with groups of stakeholders, contractors, and team members, we were able to coordinate with the project’s multiple dry utility and telecommunication companies. Our team was also flexible and could adapt to changing project conditions, so we were able to solve issues as they surfaced. Our work included the relocation of water and sewer utilities, design of new traffic signals using the overhead contact system(OCS) poles, and roadway and streetcar stop grading.
The final design makes the Tucson Modern Streetcar a practical mode of transport to and from the University of Arizona and an integral part of the city’s bustling downtown.
