Preparing the City of Toledo for rainy days
The Consent Decree with the US Environmental Protection Agency required Toledo, Ohio, to update the debris and floatables control in their wastewater storage tunnels. In the twenty years that these tunnels had been in operation, the amount of accumulated debris was reducing tunnel effectiveness.
That meant even more overflows when wet weather events got heavy.
Our job was design, construction engineering, and on-site project representation. We also prepared the specifications for the tunnel clearing, and we designed vertical mechanical bar screens to control debris and floatables. And with updated flow meters at all overflows, the City will have more accurate measurement of the events that do happen.
With more capacity, new dewatering pumps, and more screening at storage tunnel overflows, the City is better prepared for rainy days.
