Designing a multi-level fueling system by working with fire officials
The InterLink at T.F. Green Airport is home to the rental car area for the airport and adjacent bus and train stations. our client wanted to combine the rental car servicing and customer areas in a garage within the airport site, reducing the need for shuttle services and providing one facility for nearly all modes of transportation. However, since the airport is located in the middle of a neighborhood, there was nowhere but up to expand, and Rhode Island fire code does not permit vehicle fueling above ground level.
We approached the challenge of designing a multi-level fueling system by working with fire officials on a unique combination of fueling solutions and mitigation measures designed specifically for the ease and safety of passengers and operators. These included a firefighting foam deluge system, automated and enhanced emergency controls, double wall steel fuel piping, detailed traffic striping, and other safety measures. The multi-level facility and fueling solutions we developed make this kind of intermodal hub a feasible reality for communities hoping to establish similar interconnectedness and environmental responsibility.
