Creating a research environment to be functional, flexible, and compliant
Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is used in PET/MRI processes to assess glucose metabolism in the heart, lungs, and brain. The Stony Brook Medicine team needed a new laboratory to manufacture FDG, so they turned to our team of life sciences facility design specialists.
The systems involved in specialty healthcare laboratories need intricate design and an in-depth knowledge. Our team worked with the staff of Stony Brook Medicine to create an environment that was not only functional and flexible, but also complied with the current Good Laboratory Practices and Good Manufacturing Practices enforced by the US Food and Drug Administration.
The design includes 100% outside air, VAV airflow tracking control, a dedicated air-cooled chiller, DDC controls, a high velocity lab exhaust fan, and an architectural screenwall around the mechanical equipment. We coordinated routing and usage of critical utilities (maintaining operation during the renovation process) by working with a large animal biosafety laboratory building extension adjacent to the site.
