Keeping the environment in mind
With the City of Santa Cruz growing, the metropolitan transit district operations and maintenance facility needed to grow too. So, we designed the Metro Base facility with a new maintenance facility, operations building, bus fuel-and-wash facility, and reconfigured bus parking to accommodate additional fleet vehicles. With a goal to increase the operational efficiency of Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District’s (SCMTD) facilities, our design also accommodates expansion for future growth with sustainability in mind.
Our modern design uses industrial materials—corrugated metal siding, large windows, and exposed concrete for the facility. Sustainable design concepts create a high-quality working environment while lowering potential operational costs—operable windows, extensive sun shading, and the use of recycled materials into the design helps satisfy these goals. The operations building is designed to have a zero ecological footprint to mitigate the structure’s impact on the local watershed. By exceeding California’s energy code, Title 24 Building Energy Efficiency Standards, by 20 percent or more, the design meets the Savings by Design benchmark.
The result is a campus plan for the facility that extends the design heritage of this unique area while addressing the contemporary needs of operational efficiency and environmental sustainability—now and for the future of SCMTD and the community of Santa Cruz.
