Designing a solution to reuse water and create a more resilient community
Because of new regulations, Salt River Project (SRP) was faced with a dilemma for discharging the cooling tower blowdown water from the Santan Generating Station—construct a lengthy pipeline or build an on-site pretreatment system. Both options proved to be expensive and time consuming. That’s where Stantec came in to help.
Stantec and SRP teamed up first in an evaluation study and then in the design and construction of the preferred alternative. The team identified feasible locations for the discharge pipeline and determined a preferred alternative. Being involved in the evaluation study allowed Stantec to work quickly to design the pipeline.
Our team managed to significantly minimize the project’s cost and schedule by using existing pressure pipe, upsizing current gravity pipe, and minimizing the installation of new pressure pipe. Not only did this project upgrade and reuse existing infrastructure, it also allowed the water to be recycled into SRP’s irrigation system, instead of being discharged elsewhere.
