Creating child-friendly space focused on family-centered comforts and amenities
The design of an inpatient unit can be much more than “just another stay at the hospital”. In order to transform this norm, the new Seraph-McSparren Pediatric Inpatient Center at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health is centered around the patient and family experience.
The traditional core areas, often treated as separate rooms, have been designed as one large space that transforms into a series of smaller rooms. The greeter, parent lounge, pantry, play area, and teen spaces are comingled in an open interactive flexible space. Floor patterns, color and changes in ceiling heights create visual interest and division of space. Age appropriate interactive elements have been introduced throughout the unit to provide intuitive wayfinding as well as introduce age appropriate diversions to the patients and their siblings. These family-center comforts and amenities also include parent showers, laundry facilities, and generous family space within the private patient rooms.
For this project, our team was tasked with providing architectural and interior design services, and every effort was made to make the patient family feel comfortable during their stay on the unit. The result? An environment where patients can rest, recover, and feel safe.
