A fast track design for a water system that provides safe drinking water and mitigates groundwater contamination
When groundwater contamination from an oil refinery threatened drinking water safety, the refinery owners and the City of North Pole contracted our team to help.
Stantec completed design engineering in eight months for 34.4 miles of HDPE water main, a water treatment plant expansion, two booster pump stations, and a 0.75 MG treated water reservoir in a sub-arctic community, where winter temperatures reach -50 degrees Fahrenheit. The buried piping is designed with insulation, water circulation, and heating systems to protect the water from freezing. Construction was completed in 20 months, ahead of schedule and nearly $15 million under original estimate. We administered the construction contract, which was procured using a Best Value approach (not low bid) combining qualification-based selection (QBS) with price and incentive factors.
The project is unique in its scale, the importance to the community, and the speed at which it was accomplished—it took 28 months in total. We’re proud to have helped the City of North Pole provide safe drinking water to thousands of people.
