Bringing history back to life

Located in the historic neighborhood of Ballard, the National Nordic Museum is a cultural museum dedicated to preserving and sharing the identity of both Nordic and Nordic American peoples. Having been located in the same building since 1980, the collection had grown past what the museum could handle—we were there to help.

Our team provided lighting, acoustics, and audiovisual design for the interior and exterior spaces for a new 57,000 square foot building. The project includes interactive and immersive core exhibitions, dedicated areas for classrooms and craft studio, and a state-of-the-art auditorium. Temporary exhibitions will be presented in a 4,000 square foot gallery designed to accommodate exhibitions from Nordic countries and an additional 4,000 square feet of climate-controlled storage for art collection and objects.

Now complete, the museum can clearly showcase the incredible history of Nordic people.

Shannon Glover, Senior Lighting Designer

Lighting is storytelling. It’s the voice of the architecture, the emotion of the environment. Its controls are the plot that activates the space.

Basel Jurdy, Principal, Discipline Lead - Acoustics & Vibration

Acoustic design creates an auditory signature that marries architecture with function―invoking a sensory experience and emotional response that connects people to place.
