Dedication to restoring wetlands habitat to its natural environment

As part of the Air Force downsize following the Cold War, Loring AFB was no longer needed as a strategic defensive position in North America. During the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) program, environmental services were required to remove contaminated sediments and execute compensatory mitigation.

Working cooperatively with state and federal agencies, our team was engaged to execute services over the past 25 years. This has included baseline terrestrial and aquatic ecological characterizations, hydraulic analysis and modeling, ecological risk assessments, fisheries population surveys, restoration planning and design, construction oversight, and long-term ecological monitoring. Notably, the creation, design, and construction of an emergent marsh adjacent to the East Loring Reservoir utilized water control structures and now provides a high value wading bird and waterfowl habitat.

In the end, we were able to restore more than 55 acres of wetland and 2.5 acres of riverine and high value brook trout habitat. The US National Academy of Science uses this work as an example of a successful wetland and stream restoration project, and several short courses across the US feature this project as a case study.
