Highlighting the best of Long Island

The first of 11 new visitor centers to open in New York State, the Long Island Welcome Center skillfully executes a vision to showcase each of New York State’s unique regions.

The exterior of the building incorporates a shingle-style portico entrance, with arched openings framing an ornamental window, and incorporates expansive doors and a porch that are reminiscent of Long Island’s grand estates. A walk of fame sidewalk was also included to commemorate famous local residents.

Through the doors, the theme continues with interior spaces inspired by a combination of water, beach, sea glass, wind, and the historic farms that dot the region. A warm, sand and ocean-inspired, terrazzo floor in the lobby incorporates the outline of Long Island and surrounding water with brass inlays that highlight local attractions. A Taste NY Market featuring locally-grown produce from Long Island growers can be found across from the dining area, and the restrooms use colors and themes inspired by the beach.

This unique space was fast-tracked to meet a tight schedule. A truly collaborative effort, we worked closely with several NYS Agencies including the Department of Transportation, Empire State Development, Department of Agriculture and Markets, Office of General Services, Suffolk County agencies, and the Governor’s Office.
