Transforming a congested, car-centric intersection into a welcoming environment for users of all modes of transportation
Kenmore Square is one of Boston's most iconic square—it's where seven roads and two branches of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) Green Line trolley intersect. To top it off, it's right next to Fenway Park and is directly in the path of Red Sox game-day traffic.
Our urban places group’s mobility team is working with the Boston Transportation Department and the MBTA, as well as Mark Development, LLC, and renowned city planner, Jeff Speck, on a new vision for historic Kenmore Square. The goal is to transform a congested intersection into a welcoming environment for users of all modes of transportation. For a busy area of the city with little pedestrian and bicycle accommodations, this new vision requires significant changes to the existing roadway configuration as well as the redesign of highly traveled corridors.
This team is up to the challenge. We're providing ongoing mobility design and analysis support throughout the development, permitting, and design processes of this project. Utilizing our traffic modeling and microsimulation technologies, we are building agency support, neighborhood buy-in, and abutter approvals for one of the most significant intersection changes Boston has ever seen. Thanks to our team’s analysis and expertise, the roadway and public realm design will now be more than just an idea.
