Serving more patients at home and in the hospital throughout the entire network while also saving on pharmacy construction costs
The Jefferson Health Home Infusion and Specialty Pharmacy had outgrown its location on the main urban campus of Jefferson Hospital and University. A new facility was required to keep up with anticipated volume increases to serve the expanding Jefferson enterprise network.
Jefferson located a new facility suited to administrative office space, shared services, and a licensed pharmacy area. Our team then provided design services, dividing the licensed pharmacy into two areas. The home infusion pharmacy contains a sterile compounding room, hazardous and high-risk drug compounding rooms, and rooms for automated production. The specialty pharmacy will move in with pick/check/pack stations along a conveyor belt. A generator provides enough redundant power to keep the compounding pharmacy operational in the event of grid power loss. A redundant dual-tunnel air handling unit and exhaust fans allow compounding to operate uninterrupted during routine maintenance, filter changes, or emergency repairs.
Notably, a clever HVAC design saved on construction costs while also managing utility costs in the long-term. Ultimately, this project allowed for the expansion of Jefferson’s home infusion program and the expanded specialty pharmacy will now be able to serve Jefferson staff as well as Jefferson patients throughout the entire health system.
