This project opened our eyes to the opportunity for better, faster, and cheaper modeling without sacrificing accuracy or usability
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and local communities use 2D HEC-RAS models to understand risk of flooding. FEMA needed to perform a fast-paced investigation into the utility of more than 500 watershed scale models ranging from 50-400 square miles and engaged our project team to take on the challenge.
Running one flood hazard event simulation for larger model domains often takes over a business day to execute on a desktop computer, so we knew we needed to leverage cloud computing and storage. The ability to pre-process, simulate, and post-process these data intensive models in a matter of one to two weeks was critical to the project success. Our team opted to use Stantec’s new platform, Connect, and quickly found it gave us a clear advantage. It allowed us to run models many times faster than traditional desktop computing and we were able to integrate Quality Control processes and post-processing workflows that would have taken thousands of hours to replicate if done manually.
By using our Stantec.io Connect platform, we were able to exceed FEMA expectations in timing and budget constraints. This allowed the local communities in the geography of these models to understand flood risk in a more accurate and timely manner.
