The latest in lighting technology and thoughtful design illuminate an exhibition, embodying a museum’s mission to educate.

The Jewish Holocaust is one of the most significant and disturbing events in human history. When the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum developed its gallery dedicated to the memory of this atrocity, they called upon our expertise in lighting design to enhance the visitor experience.

Our goal was to create a lighting program that is unobtrusive, adds another dimension to the exhibition narrative, and provides cues that guide visitors along the storyline. Lighting is programmed and is actuated by the AV system to usher visitors up three flights of stairs, changing color and dimming to cue visitor movement. In the gallery, the Jewish Holocaust is presented geographically, highlighted with survivor testimonies and independent topics displayed on backlit screens. The lighting gradually dims throughout, then brightens as visitors transition into the Human Rights wing, correlating emotions with environmental changes along the narrative storyline. The Genocide gallery dares to confront visitors with their own culpability—using areas of shadows but providing nowhere to hide. Utilizing recessed adjustable lighting and hard-wired LED candles, the Reflection Room affords serene decompression and a moment of peace before exiting.

Working with the museum’s curators and designers was an extraordinary opportunity to collaborate in the dimension of storytelling, providing illumination beyond simply lighting.

Shannon Glover, Senior Lighting Designer

Lighting is storytelling. It’s the voice of the architecture, the emotion of the environment. Its controls are the plot that activates the space.

Lauren MacLeod, Principal, Lighting Design

Who hasn’t sat in awe of light reflecting on water or filtering through trees? Light inspires us. It creates life and stimulates the spirit.
