Continuity of compassionate care for children during the course of cardiac procedures
To assist with the growth of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) medical services, the sixth floor Cardiac Cath Lab of the main hospital was being explored for expansion. This resulted in the demand for additional prep and recovery rooms to improve the clinic’s workflow.
Stantec was engaged as the prime consultant providing architecture and engineering services. Our first order was to relocate the administration suite in place to the eighth floor. We then transformed the space to present a playful and engaging clinical environment reinforcing CHOP’s identity and character. Notable to our work was the customizable lighting experience. Equipping all patient rooms with circadian-supportive lighting controls, we gave users a choice between scenes that encourage serotonin or melatonin production. At any time, all settings can be overridden by an exam switch for color temperatures and intensities that meet the functional requirements of clinicians. The fully dimmable direct and indirect lighting in the hallways and nurse stations include color temperatures and intensities ideal for transporting sedated patients.
The expanded and reconfigured Cardiac Cath Lab’s Prep and Recovery Unit provides a sense of welcoming and eases the minds of the patients, families, and caregivers.
