Designing streetscape enhancements to make visitors remember Laughlin, Nevada
Because Casino Drive fronts a majority of the hotel and casino properties, our challenges were to design a landscape treatment that wouldn’t block hotel sight-lines and the signage on those properties. We also need to design around extensive utilities mapped within the landscaped planter areas in the medians, and create a streetscape that could deal with river wildlife and blowing sand. Working with horticulturalists and nursery professionals, we developed a list of plants that could tolerate the area’s extreme temperature range. With several points of connection needed for irrigation due to existing sleeving in place, we saved the county money by using a solar irrigation system.
The streetscape features custom landscape walls that match nearby park improvements and feature custom designed art sculptures—both kinetic and stationary—unlike any others done on streetscapes in southern Nevada. They celebrate the life and energy of the Colorado River for the traveling public and are key to the Convention Center’s tourism goal of creating a memorable place to revisit.
