Targeting LEED Gold certification, this new headquarters complex will be sustainable, open, and friendly

The goal was to make the new California Military Department Headquarters more than simply a military facility. It needed to be more like a corporate headquarters than a typical military building. Plus, it was going to be the first large-scale net zero energy project implemented by the State of California. The plan? Reduce environmental impact, optimize performance, lower energy and operating costs, conserve resources, and increase occupant satisfaction and productivity.

The design includes on-site photovoltaic arrays that serves a dual purpose as parking shade structures. Additionally, façade designs are specific to the building orientation and aid with daylight harvesting and net zero energy goals.

The relationship with the adjoining planned development community was also an important consideration. The chosen design aesthetic befits the facility’s stature as a military headquarters—the facades are well articulated with a combination of brick veneer, metal panels, and fenestrations. All the buildings on the campus are designed with the same architectural principles, broadcasting a cohesive campus aesthetic to the surrounding community. This headquarters complex goes a long way toward ensuring the Military Department is an effective and energy-efficient force.
