One of the most aggressive bridge preservation and replacement programs in the country

Unlike anything the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has done before, we’ve partnered with the State of Kentucky to develop one of the most aggressive bridge rehabilitation and replacement programs in the country. These critical structures affect every resident and visitor to the Bluegrass State, and this key program will prioritize the safety and soundness of existing bridges across Kentucky.

The goal? To rehabilitate, repair, and replace smaller rural bridges throughout Kentucky. This means tackling nearly three times as many bridge projects as we do in a normal year. The structures in the Bridging Kentucky program are smaller, local bridges. On average they’re 18.5-feet wide by 60-feet long, around 60% are locally owned by counties or agencies, and they have an average daily vehicle traffic of less than 900 cars and trucks per day.

We closely analyzed each bridge in the program to outline a unique preservation plan that made sense for that individual structure. With a data-driven approach using AASHTOWare Bridge Management (BrM) software, we were able to gain an understanding of rehabilitations, replacements, or inventory removals. A lifecycle cost analysis was conducted to evaluate the best course of action for each specific bridge. Ultimately, it was decided that 49% of the bridges needed rehabilitation while 48% needed replacement.
