Developing an iPad and web application for documenting inspections that makes tracking and reporting easier and more efficient
Under the Clean Water Act, stormwater discharge operators associated with certain industrial activities are required to obtain National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits from the EPA. They have to identify, inspect, and monitor pollutants that could appear in their stormwater discharges.
Our team was contracted by the Boston Water and Sewer Commission (BWSC) to develop a tracking database and create standard operating procedures for facility inspections. After that? Conduct the inspections, report findings, and develop protocols for enforcement actions.
To record and manage observations made by inspection teams, we developed an iPad web application and web portal. Basically, the inspectors would choose their facility from a list then complete the inspection on the tablet. They completed checklists and multiple-choice questions, added photos, and filled out multiple selection fields.
The client can use the web portal to view facility statuses, and with the right permissions, they can update observations, mark as reviewed, manage worklists, and add new activities.
This iPad management application has increased the efficiency and consistency of the inspections at these Boston facilities, and with this information in hand, the BWSC is better prepared to monitor compliance with permit requirements.
