A much-needed modernization for northeast Philadelphia’s only emergency department
With its last major renovation dating back to 1970, the Emergency Department at Aria Health's Frankford Campus needed an upgrade. The only emergency department in Philadelphia’s bustling northeast side, the Frankford Campus accommodates 60,000 emergency visits each year.
Our project managers collaborated with emergency department and ancillary staff to develop plans and set the scope of the new expansion. Incorporating Lean principles, our team of Lean- and Six Sigma-trained healthcare planners designed a flexible space that increases privacy for patients and maximizes flexibility for staff.
During slow periods, staff can shut down areas of the department. And when additional exam rooms are needed, staff can reconfigure the space. Treatment rooms organized into two pods can flex up and down depending on need.
The LEED Silver emergency department—expanded to more than twice its original size—includes 36 treatment positions and a central work area that maintains maximal visibility.
