Designing new ways for people with limited mobility to get around
Transit is an easy way to get around in New York City—unless you’re elderly or disabled. New York City Transit is working hard to change this. As part of its ongoing effort to improve accessibility for all of its users, the agency decided to do a feasibility study and turned to our team for help.
We looked at the operational requirements and economic feasibility of providing the elderly and disabled full accessibility at two stations—one underground in the Bronx and one elevated in Queens. Using 3D modeling, we identified the best ways to make these very complex transit hubs more accessible and presented the options to stakeholders in a highly visualized format. And, we figured out how to minimize the required structural modifications, utility impacts, and effects on transit operations.
With this study, our integrated team of engineers and architects developed ADA-compliant design alternatives and identified cost-effective approaches that will make getting around a real possibility for New York City Transit’s less-mobile users.
