Remediating and reclaiming a copper mine that had been inactive for more than 20 years
As the engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) contractor, we provided construction, engineering, environmental, public relations support, management, and maintenance services for the remediation and reclamation of the abandoned Rio Tinto Mine site—an underground copper mine that had been inactive for more than 20 years.
We supported the development of the Administrative Order of Consent (AOC), which allowed for a voluntary cleanup of the site. All designs were completed with close interaction and approval from the Nevada Department of Environmental Protection (NDEP). Immediately after completion of the remedial construction, the surface water quality in a nearby creek and the downgradient receiving streams had noticeably improved.
To keep the community informed, we established a water-quality database to make stakeholders and owner’s representatives aware of the changing water quality in the area. We also published a quarterly newsletter to keep stakeholders up to date on the project’s progress. In the end, stakeholders were more than satisfied with our effective communication methods.
