Achieving sustainable travel in a city University
Commissioned by Plymouth University, we were asked to manage the overhaul of their travel plan as part of the University’s Carbon and Space Management strategies. This was a complex project, notwithstanding the University’s ambitious goal of achieving “green university” status after managing to reduce their parking levels considerably during the previous five years.
Plymouth University has numerous campus buildings scattered across the city, each with specific needs and varying levels of accessibility, especially by sustainable modes, and as such, travelling between campuses was a key part of the plan. In addition, Plymouth City Council use iTRACE, software that is primarily used for monitoring commercial travel plans. This meant that we needed to adapt the travel surveys distributed to staff and students to make them iTRACE compliant; this was done through close liaison with the University and the Council to ensure the needs of all parties were met.
Following our involvement, Plymouth University achieved and exceeded its goals. Sustainable travel was improved across all campuses, with more than 75% of staff and students travelling more sustainably. Plymouth University is now one of the top-placed Universities in the People and Planet Green League, achieving a first-class award for environmental performance.
