Brownfield regeneration built around connectivity and active travel
In the Salford suburb of Pendleton, our teams were engaged by Lovell Together to provide master planning, architecture, landscape architecture, planning, and engagement services in the third phase of the area’s ongoing brownfield regeneration.
Our goal was to provide contemporary, high-quality, sustainable homes with a mix of types and tenures including affordable housing. With locally reflective red brick walls, the 127 energy efficient homes were designed thoughtfully and timelessly, and residents will have access to 15 allotments on site.
The public realm needed to be supportive of the housing mix, and through the broad street at the heart of the scheme, native trees were planted within rain gardens to create community space and address surface water drainage, while also providing an environment for plants to thrive in wet and urban environments. The palette of plants and trees have been selected to provide climate resilience, enhancing biodiversity, and safeguarding the long-term viability of the green infrastructure.
As well, our teams worked together to bring active travel best practice to this project, with the tree-lined street designed to give priority to cyclists via its layout and materials choice while also connecting the community to existing cycling infrastructure across Manchester.
With many sustainable features, this innovative, attractive neighborhood represents a key change in the ongoing regeneration of Pendleton.
