Supporting the growth of an entire region
Lake Qarun is the third largest lake in Egypt and an important natural freshwater resource. Unfortunately, the lack of a centralized wastewater network in the region has resulted in raw sewage discharges into Lake Qarun, causing significant environmental, economic, and social damage.
To increase access to sanitation in rural areas around Lake Qarun, the Fayoum Company for Water and Wastewater (FWWC) worked with the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater (HCWW) under the authority of the Egyptian Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities to create the Fayoum Wastewater Expansion. The project is financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and co-financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Union’s Neighborhood Investment Facility (NIF). The loan will benefit the FWWC, a regional subsidiary of the HCWW. FWWC is the project entity whereas HCWW is the beneficiary of the loan.
As the consultant, we’re responsible for preparing detailed design for construction of the wastewater infrastructure and to assist FWWC with procurement of contracts and construction supervision as well as help to monitor implementation of the environmental and social action plan. Our work includes the construction of seven new wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), the rehabilitation of five WWTPs, and the decommissioning of six existing WWTPs. We’re also working on the design and construction of new pressurized rising mains, approximately 700 kilometres (435 miles) of sewer lines, 62 new sewage pumping stations, and the procurement of 28 evacuation trucks.
