Qatar Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy both recognize the need for sound water management to sustain Qatar’s fast growth despite scarce natural freshwater. The nation’s Permanent Water Resources Committee (PWRC) mandated the development of the Qatar Water Security Policy and Qatar Water Strategy and Implementation Plan to provide the needed strategic vision and action plan towards a water-secure future.
The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA) selected Stantec to develop the comprehensive water resources policy and strategy framework. We relied on our deep field expertise to develop a framework that guides both sustainable management of available resources and long-term water security. This included the development of Qatar’s most robust and granular water balance model to date. We geospatially mapped the entire flow of water down to the plot level to track its journey throughout the system. In addition, our team undertook a comprehensive assessment of the institutional framework governing the sector.
Based on the technical and governance assessment of the Qatar water sector, the Qatar Water Strategy 2030 outlines an effective and bold strategy to manage all waters available to Qatar to support a water-secure future, socioeconomic development, and national competitiveness.
