This strategic sewerage system enhancement project is preparing Abu Dhabi’s sewerage system for a busy future
The population of Abu Dhabi Emirate is estimated to reach 4.9 million by 2040, compared to 2.5 million in 2015. This means that the sewage networks to serve the communities need some dramatic upsizing. Our teams took up task as lead design consultant followed by construction oversight across three major elements of the Asset Enhancement Scheme (AES)—a program of works for up sizing the sewerage network.
The project included design and construction of 63 kilometers of sewers up to 40 meters deep, elimination of over 25 pumping stations, and design of temporary pumping works. Ultimately these assets will gravitate the sewage to a new deep tunnel sewer and centralized wastewater treatment facilities, where it will be treated and reclaimed for irrigation in this arid environment.
Technical challenges included micro tunneling of large diameter pipes in loose soil strata with high ground water and re-design of drop shafts to deal with unforeseen site conditions. Both challenges resulted in innovative techniques to stop upward floating of pipes and a new down sized drop shaft design that is now a proven solution for future projects.
