Delivering a sustainable and secure potable water source for Kilkenny City and surrounding areas

Kilkenny Regional Water Supply Scheme

Uisce Éireann commissioned our team to manage all stages of this comprehensive water supply scheme from concept through handover. Our brief was to provide a secure, sustainable potable water source for Kilkenny City and surrounding areas to support population and business growth. We determined that this required developing a new intake facility with associated transfer pumps and pipelines from the environmentally sensitive River Nore. The scheme also included upgrade of the water treatment plant while providing an uninterrupted water supply during construction.

Our team began by undertaking initial concept and feasibility assessments, after which we progressed through preliminary and detailed designs, and secured the necessary planning approvals. The preliminary design informed various investigative surveys including ground condition, archaeological, hydrological, and topographical surveys, which helped us refine the final design.

Our role included the completion of detailed route selection and preparation of the requisite documentation to facilitate the execution of the compulsory purchase order (CPO) process for the required lands.

Once on-site, following an extensive procurement process, we were responsible for administering the contract and managing the commissioning of the works, guiding the successful completion of the project while reducing disruption of water supplies to customers for the duration of on-site activities.

Today, the new abstraction infrastructure enhances water treatment processes, increases treatment capacity, and pipeline improvements that bolster resilience meet the medium- to long-term needs of Kilkenny City and its surrounding areas.
