Updating airport infrastructure to better support the community and tourist industry
As traffic demands grew for Grantley Adams International Airport—the sole designated port of entry for persons arriving by air in Barbados—the need to rehabilitate its single runway became clear. In 2014, Grantley Adams was identified as the 10th busiest airport in the Caribbean region, and continues to operate as a major gateway to the Eastern Caribbean and has direct service to myriad destinations, and is an important air-link for cruise ship passengers departing and arriving at the port of Bridgetown. To that end, we’re providing design services for pavement extension and resurfacing, project management, and advisory services on this active airfield. Following a complete review of the airport’s extensive system of in-pavement airfield lights, we are also designing a new LED system to replace the aging aviation ground lighting systems.
As we resurface existing pavements, we’re working with the airport to allow the airport to remain open every day. Upon completion, we’ll have resurfaced pavements appropriate to type and usage, extended the aircraft parking aprons, and rehabilitated and widened designated taxiway shoulders. Our electrical design contributions will also extend to areas of new development, including the new taxiway, main terminal apron and new south general aviation, including high mast lighting for these areas.
