A unique early childhood education centre
Needing to expand and relocate their outdated childcare facility, Thompson Rivers University (TRU) converted a former ginseng warehouse into an innovative childcare centre—the TRU Early Childhood Education Centre (ECEC)—combining childcare, early education, an Indigenous teaching centre, and research functions by transforming a space that houses both a non-profit daycare and an early childcare education centre.
Working with stakeholder groups, we provided full services for this unique project—functional programming, architecture, interior design, structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, landscape, traffic consulting, and IM/IT and security system services. In designing all program areas within this first-of-a-kind facility, our designers drew inspiration from the Reggio Emilia Approach, an educational philosophy that encourages children’s curiosity as they explore and connect with the world around them. The daycare’s interior is organized like a small village and will foster research and connection between children and adults.
The new ECEC will provide parents at TRU much needed childcare services while serving as a model for other institutions looking to combine these basic services with faculty research.
