Creating a critical link for transit in Toronto
The Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension project will provide a critical link in the existing Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway system. It will link Downsview Park in Toronto to York Region. Scheduled for completion in 2017, the line will have six new stations, including York University which now receives 1,900 busloads of people a day. The terminal station is at Vaughan, the fastest growing municipality in Canada. The subway runs through 8.5-kilometre long, 6-metre diameter twin tunnels.
The immense size and scope of this project involves intricate planning by the project team’s 200+ members. As head of the project controls team, one of four major divisions, Stantec is managing costs, schedules, contract administration, risk analysis, reporting, and more.
Early work involved dealing with property owners and land purchases, and maintaining design parameters while accommodating stakeholder demands. Now under construction, we are monitoring contractor performance, maintaining safety standards, and ensuring schedule adherence. The team approach considers stakeholder interests and ensures that challenges are dealt with proactively.
