Successfully integrating a century-old historic building
The Théâtre du Bic has been a landmark on the Lower Saint-Lawrence cultural scene for 50 years. After moving the emblematic entertainment barn to its current site in 1989, the City of Rimouski and the theater's management wanted to make it the heart of an ambitious renovation and expansion project. To be integrated into the new building complex, the century-old structure had to undergo major reinforcement and stabilization work.
To meet the theater's new scenic and architectural requirements, our Civil Engineering and Building teams increased the barn's load-bearing capacity with reinforcements specially adapted to the irregular shape of the roof trusses. Our team then anchored the new buildings to the barn using a complex structural system that respected the distinctive features of the barn's structure. The combination of a steel and wood hybrid structure ensured a compliant and visually harmonious connection. The work also provided an opportunity to improve the building's energy efficiency.
In addition to the renovated auditorium, the Théâtre du Bic now boasts a set and costume workshop, a creative studio, a bar area and a green room, offering audiences and artists a multifunctional, modern and convivial venue.
