The integration of new technologies onto the electrical grid
Nova Scotia Power (NS Power) had set out on a multi-year pilot project to optimize their grid. They wanted to improve renewable energy generation variability, minimize power outages, and use generation resources to their maximum efficiency—so they decided to integrate a battery storage option. Our Power team helped integrate a 1.25 MVA Tesla Powerpack battery energy storage system (BESS) into NS Power’s substation.
We provided electrical, geotechnical, structural, and civil design to integrate the BESS. In addition, 10 customers on the selected feeder hosted Tesla Powerwalls and all assets were managed by a real-time distribution energy networking platform.
With detailed engineering, project management, construction support, commissioning support, and procurement support—our team provided a suite of services for the integration of the BESS into the substation.
We also performed a detailed connection impact assessment that helped NS Power understand the effect of the BESS on their distribution system. The assessment determined feasibility, identified possible effects on assets, and included recommendations to reduce those impacts.
With the addition of the Tesla Powerwall, NS Power is now enjoying a more efficient system that’ll keep their power reliable.
