Making an impact on the environment for good

Thirty years of work had left the local wastewater treatment plant worn out and run down. It couldn’t meet current regulations. Its processes were starting to impact the environment, and the town needed even more from it. Shellbrook was growing.

But even though the town was flourishing, it didn’t have the cash flow to float a full renovation of the existing facility. We started by evaluating the system and outlining some plans to manage future growth. And get the plant up to code—not just current code either, but in line with new codes and regulations that will be mandatory in the near future.

Shellbrook added our report to a submission for funding under the Building Canada Fund (Communities Component). With a whopping $7.7 million approval, we set out to implement our recommendations. We reused as much as we could of the current structures, converted the old building into a sewage pumping station, and built a new process facility. The new plant is chugging along beautifully, and it’ll support Shellbrook through new growth for decades to come.
