Priddis River Hazard Study

Identifying hazards along 51 kilometres of creeks in the Alberta Foothills

Helping protect Albertans and communities from potential flooding

With an extensive network of streams and lakes, the Alberta Government’s Flood Hazard Identification Program helps keep residents and properties safe. Under the program, we completed a hazard study along 32 kilometres of Fish Creek and 19 kilometres of Priddis Creek. The study included survey, hydrology, hydraulic modelling, channel assessment, two-zone hazard mapping, and flood risk inventory.

The hydrologic assessment assembled flood peak data, evaluated the impact of multiple reservoirs on flood flows, developed a flood frequency analysis, and commented on the potential effects of climate change. The survey and base data collection included 445 cross sections, 21 bridges, and 4 culverts. Our team also developed a 1-dimensional model calibrated to both low and flood flow highwater mark data. The model was used to map flood inundation areas from 2-year up to 1000-year flood events. Our team also completed a risk assessment to identify hazards to infrastructure and the public—including roads, buildings, bridges, culverts, and the estimated population at risk for each of the flood and inundation areas.

The final study results included the delineation of floodway, flood fringe, and floodplain zones to improve public safety and reduce future flood damages and disaster assistance costs.
