Ensuring superior runway conditions for nearly 5 million annual passengers
Working closely with the Ottawa Airport Authority and the general contractor, we reconstructed Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport’s Runway 07-25 to improve its performance in wet weather and to ensure the runway end safety areas comply with Transport Canada’s standards and best practices. All of this in 70 days, with no interruption to scheduled air traffic.
While around-the-clock construction was the norm, we worked to find other solutions for getting the project done in time that did not require such an intense schedule for the entire project. One was to use Civil 3D design software, which allowed the general contractor to import the data directly into their GPS controlled construction equipment. We also used LIDAR survey methods to complete the as-built survey, which reduced the time and impact on operations from one week to six hours. Moving into the paving process, we placed hot mix asphalt at over 700 tons per hour supplied from three separate plants, a record in the City of Ottawa and an unusual challenge for Stantec’s laboratory and quality assurance team.
