Coordination and collaboration for superior results

The area serving Kananskis Village and Nakiska Ski Resort required upgrades to the water and wastewater treatment plants, new potable water reservoirs, and extensive distribution piping. Alberta Infrastructure used a P3 model (DBFOM) to procure the required services, making this the first and only such water/wastewater project completed to date. EPCOR is the financier and operator of the facilities. LSI provided the construction services, with Stantec leading the design.

A popular area with skiers, hikers, and tourists, the improvements required close coordination with a range of community and tourism groups, including the Kananaskis Golf Course, Delta Hotel, Alberta Parks and Recreation, Alberta Infrastructure, and Nakiska Ski Hill. With many hikers and skiers exploring the region, it was important to minimize the impact of the improvements. As a portion of the project passes by a golf course, work in this area needed to be completed in the winter months, while work around the ski hill took place during the summer months. The area adjacent to the campground was also completed in the winter while keeping 12 residents with water throughout the process. Finally, water and wastewater services had to be maintained to the Delta Hotel, which is open year round.

The project included 12 km of water distribution piping. The capacity of the water treatment plant was increased from 1.2 MLD to 3 MLD, while the wastewater treatment plant was increased from 1.2 MLD to 1.8 MLD. The two new potable reservoirs each hold 2.8 ML. Located in a pristine and natural environment, the project had strict regulatory requirements in place for all phases of the project.
