Creating a welcoming community presence for public safety through appealing and secure design
In small rural communities, like Elk Point, public institutions assume a larger presence. So, when we designed a new $4.9 million Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) detachment we wanted to support welcoming spaces for the public as well as functional spaces for police operations. The new facility includes office and support space for operational and administrative staff, public areas such as an elder’s room to accommodate Indigenous cultural needs, a multipurpose room, victim services, exhibits and detention facilities.
We worked closely with the RCMP at K Division to develop a functional design providing flexible space and future growth opportunities, while incorporating stringent RCMP Project Management Manual requirements, including specific security, acoustic, and public interface requirements. Our design also improves workflow by addressing where tasks need to be performed.
Equally important. the new building is designed to enhance the relationship between policing and the community with welcoming public spaces dedicated to the need for safety, respect, cultural space, confidentiality and security.
