The new $1.3 billion Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital will be the first “smart” hospital in Canada.
As one of Canada’s fastest growing cities, Vaughan very much needed convenient access to high-quality healthcare. The new $1.3 billion Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital is about to change all that.
Doubling access to care in the community, the 11-story, 1,200,000-square-foot hospital consists of inpatient medical-surgical units positioned on top of a diagnostic and treatment podium. Key clinical programs include emergency services, diagnostic imaging, surgical services, critical care unit, neonatal intensive care unit, mental health inpatient services, and more. Featured in the design are 353 beds with capacity to expand to approximately 500 beds in total.
Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital is designed to optimize patient, family, and staff experience—delivering efficient and high-quality treatment, a flexible building organization, and a technology infrastructure to leverage medical service delivery advancements. It is the first “smart” hospital in Canada, featuring integrated technology that allows medical devices to speak to one another, facilitating a more streamlined, patient-focused delivery of healthcare services.
The design for this new facility is founded on connecting people with natural landscapes while utilizing intelligent technology to deliver world-class care. Mackenzie Health’s mission of continuous learning and proactive healthy living is underscored with a visible, public-facing learning centre incorporating simulation suites and classrooms for both staff professional development and community health awareness.
Incorporating several sustainable measures, including low overall energy use, water conservation, green roofs, and construction waste diversion, Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital received LEED Silver Certification.
In early 2021, Cortelluci Vaughan Hospital officially opened as a system-wide support resource for Ontario's COVID-19 pandemic response. Once the health system's needs stabilize, Cortelluci Vaughan Hospital will open as originally planned as a full-service hospital.
