Preparing officers for high-stress scenarios to better serve Calgarians

For police, training and preparedness are key to keeping officers and the public safe. Calgary Police Service (CPS) required a facility where officers could train to be tactically and technically prepared. Existing gun ranges were one-dimensional and didn’t allow for real-world applications.

As the prime consultant, we provided design and contract administration services to design an enclosure, a catwalk system and control room for a more realistic modular tactical “shoot house” training facility at CPS’ North Deerfoot Campus.

The catwalk allows instructors maximum visibility while observing training, which is also monitored and recorded via CCTV. From the control booth, lighting controls provide low-light to no-light tactical training capabilities. Automated ventilation systems clear the training environment of smoke and other shooting related pollutants. Electrical infrastructure was added so that smoke machines and other effects can be used to simulate challenging scenarios.

With enhanced training—in an intense 3D environment, officers can now be more confident in any situation they may face in the line of duty.
