Designed to better support the operational needs of Canada’s Pacific Fleet and withstand the effects of earthquakes and tsunamis

Originally constructed during World War II, Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Esquimalt’s A and B Jetties are nearing the end of their service life. To better support the operational needs of Canada’s Pacific Fleet, the Department of National Defence (DND) is replacing these two main jetties to provide more “modern, versatile, and structurally sound berthing facilities.” The overall project has been divided into three phases, with B Jetty currently underway.

The new B Jetties will be constructed on pipe piles up to 100 metres long and will be anchored into underlying bedrock. A robust structural system will tie the piles together using heavy-duty reinforced concrete beams and decking, and both are designed to support all classes of present and proposed Canadian Navy vessels.

We’re the prime consultant for this project and are providing multidisciplinary engineering services for the new B Jetty, which is 270 metres long and 26 metres wide. The marine structure design and upland civil design will meet current industry standards for addressing climate change, tsunami risks, and seismic resiliency. Our services will include consultation with the DND, developing concept studies, developing and finalizing layout (including utility connections), multidisciplinary design development using complex 3D modeling, and preparing supporting documents.

When these two jetties are replaced, Canada’s Pacific Fleet will have more resilient and versatile infrastructure for their needs.
