Alberta's Industrial Heartland Area Structure Plan

Designing a framework for economic development and prosperity

The development of this area will be sustainable, compatible, and maximize benefits for industry and the community

The Alberta Industrial Heartland (AIH) area is more than 500 square kilometres of land located northeast of the City of Edmonton. It’s one of the top areas for future growth in North America and spans over five municipalities that all have a complementary area structure plan (ASP)—Strathcona County being one of them. What’s an ASP? A guide to coordinating future growth. Strathcona County’s AIH ASP was originally approved in 2001, and it needed a refresh to reflect the significant growth and future plans for their portion of the AIH.

Through open houses and online surveys, our team helped Strathcona County by collecting important stakeholder and area resident feedback. We provided planning, engineering, and transportation services to re-imagine the ASP in a way that would support economic development and promote the use of eco-industrial principles to contribute to the area’s success.

The approved ASP provides a statutory framework for land-use planning of the subject lands and will guide development for heavy industrial, light and medium industrial, and agri-industrial uses. It also defines the provision of municipal infrastructure and services and the preservation of significant environmental areas.
